Coached by Jerry Rushton, this team posted the best ever finish at a national cross country meet with a seventh place performance at the NAIA Championships. In regular season action that fall, the Quakers posted a 7-0 record in dual and triangular meets, and captured the Taylor and Earlham Invitationals. At the state competition, Earlham won District 21 title, placed second in the Little State results, and fourth in Big State standings. John Gunn was Earlham’s top individual finisher in seven of the team’s nine races. He was second in District 21 and twenty-fourth in the national meet. Steve Kaeuper was third in District 21, and Nat White was sixth in the district and thirtieth in the national meet. Other members of the team were Mike Davis, Bob Graham, John Hastings, Dennis Hinkle, Jim Kimple, Gordon MacAlpine, Steve Mills and Loring Prosser.
