The 1998 men's soccer team finished with a 13-5-2 overall record as well as a 5-3-1 mark in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition. The Quakers lost only one game at home in the regular season, a 1-0 loss to Denison on Oct. 3. Earlham carried a 9-2-2 record into a game with perennial national power Ohio Wesleyan.

“The 1998 team featured some excellent players with great personalities,” head coach Roy Messer said. “The team played well in big games and earned a lot of praise from many different sources.”

After a narrow 1-0 defeat, the Quakers rattled off four straight victories. Earlham received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament and hosted Ohio Athletic Conference member Otterbein on Nov. 11, 1998 at Matlack Field. The Cardinals edged the Quakers 1-0. During the year, Earlham was ranked in the top 10 nationally as well as holding the No. 1 ranking in the region at points during the year.
