For being an exceptional four-sport athlete, Richard Wright received Earlham Athletic Hall of Fame Induction posthumously. Earning a total of 13 varsity letters, he gained the most distinction in golf and basketball. Wright led the Earlham College golfers to an undefeated season and the Little State meet championship in 1939 as the individual medalist. The Quakers’ top links man for four consecutive years, he successfully defended his Little State medalist honor in 1940. At the time of his graduation, Wright was the highest scoring guard in EC history with 356 points. He was a three-time All-Indiana Collegiate Conference second team guard. Wright led the Earlham squad in scoring with 142 points in 18 games as a junior. He was team captain and an E blanket winner as a senior. Wright also lettered four years in football and two years in baseball. A life-long educator, Wright served as a teacher, counselor, and coach at Williamsburg, Hagerstown, and Richmond high schools. For 22 years, he coached the Red Devils golf team, and twice they were runners-up in the state championship. Wright passed away in October 1991.
